Correcting Errors  Information about correcting errors on your tax return or changing or updating your refund deposit account.

Correcting an error before your taxes are accepted by the IRS e-file system:

If your tax return was e-filed but rejected with an IRS error code, these flag obvious typographic or math errors which are easily corrected. If you prepared your taxes with the GOV online tax prep application, you may simply log back into the GOV online tax prep application and the source of the error should be highlighted for your attention. An expanded explanation of IRS e-file error codes is available online.

If you require application support for a tax return that is being prepared or efiled through the GOV online tax application, you may contact Tax Software Support staff directly for help with specific application features from any page within the GOV online tax application.

IRS Taxpayer Assistance can provide authoritative answers to your tax-related questions and advice specific to your taxpayer obligations under the tax code. Contact them by phone (7am-10pm) in the US: 1-800-829-1040, or at your local IRS Field Office by phone or in person.

If you require application support for a tax return that is being prepared or efiled through a different private software provider, only that vendor would have access to your account information and you would need to contact their technical support staff directly.

Correcting an error after your taxes are accepted by the IRS e-file system:

If you successfully filed a tax return with incorrect information relating to the taxpayer responsibilities (taxable earnings, deductions, calculations, etc.) or taxpayer identity (your name or taxpayer ID number), then you would generally need to file an amended individual tax return on Form 1040X. Once a tax return is accepted by the efile system, taxpayers may prepare and submit an amended tax return on a physical Form 1040X to update the information currently accepted in the system.

For a bank account or a permanent address which was incorrectly designated for direct-deposit or receipt of an anticipated tax refund, you may check the status and update or correct delivery preferences for individual tax return refunds through the IRS Where's My Refund online application. Status will be available 4 days after you e-file or 3 weeks afer you file a paper return.

IRS Taxpayer Assistance can provide authoritative answers to your tax-related questions specific to your taxpayer account, including refunds, IRS letters, adjustments to your account or a payment plan. Contact them by phone (7am-10pm) in the US: 1-800-829-1040, or at your local IRS field office by phone or in person.
